Protein snacks have a reputation, and not a very good one.
Most of us have tried at least one “high-protein treat” that tasted like cardboard with a weird aftertaste. That’s why I wasn’t exactly excited when I got my hands on Legendary Foods Protein Doughnuts. I fully expected to take one bite, regret it, and move on.
Instead, I found myself reaching for another one.
They’re definitely not the same as grabbing a fresh donut from your favorite bakery, but they surprised me in a way I honestly wasn’t expecting.

Why I Tried Legendary Foods Protein Doughnuts
I actually got these for free during a gym event. Normally, I wouldn’t have bought them myself because I’m pretty serious about what I eat. I’m a big health buff, and I usually avoid products packed with artificial sweeteners whenever I can. Still, free is free, so I figured I’d give them a shot before judging them. I’m glad I did.
First Impressions
The first thing I noticed was that these don’t pretend to be gourmet donuts. If you’re expecting something warm, fluffy, and fresh from a bakery, you’ll probably be disappointed. But if you’ve ever eaten Little Debbie snacks or Hostess Donettes, that’s a much better comparison. They’re soft, shelf-stable snack cakes, and that’s exactly what Legendary Foods reminds me of. Once I stopped comparing them to fresh donuts, I enjoyed them a lot more.
The Chocolate Dipped Flavor Was My Favorite
I tried a few flavors, but the Chocolate Dipped donuts easily became my favorite. They reminded me of Hostess Donettes, except with far more protein. I even poured myself a glass of milk because they tasted like the kind of snack I’d have eaten years ago. Out of all the flavors I tried, this was the one I’d actually buy again.
Better Than Their Protein Pop-Tarts
I’ve also tried Legendary Foods’ protein Pop-Tarts and cinnamon rolls. The cinnamon rolls were decent. The Pop-Tarts? Not so much. The more I thought about them, the harder it was to compare them to real Pop-Tarts because they just aren’t the same. The donuts, on the other hand, are a noticeable improvement. They’re the first Legendary Foods snack that actually made me think, “I’d eat these again.”
A Quick Tip: Warm Them Up
One thing I definitely recommend is microwaving them for about 10 seconds.
It softens the texture and slightly melts the glaze, making them taste much better than eating them straight from the package.
It’s a small difference, but it really improves the experience.
Nutrition Is Where They Shine
One reason these donuts have become popular is their nutrition profile.
Each serving of two donuts contains:
- 20 grams of protein
- 160 calories
- 8 grams of fiber
- Zero sugar
- Gluten-free ingredients
They’re also sweetened with erythritol, which helps keep the sugar content low. If you’re following a low-carb or keto-style diet, that’s a big plus. That said, if you’re sensitive to sugar alcohols like erythritol, it’s something to keep in mind before buying.
They’re Still a Processed Snack
As much as I enjoyed them, I wouldn’t pretend they’re a health food. They’re still heavily processed, and the artificial sweeteners are the biggest reason I probably wouldn’t eat them every day. For someone like me, who usually avoids artificial sweeteners, these would be more of an occasional treat than a regular part of my diet. But when I’m craving something sweet and don’t want to destroy my daily nutrition goals, I could definitely see myself reaching for one.
Pros
- 20 grams of protein per serving.
- Only 160 calories.
- Zero sugar.
- Chocolate Dipped flavor tastes surprisingly good.
- Better than Legendary Foods’ protein Pop-Tarts.
- Even better after 10 seconds in the microwave.
Cons
- Doesn’t taste like a fresh bakery donut.
- Texture is denser than a regular donut.
- Contains erythritol, which some people prefer to avoid.
- Artificial sweeteners may not appeal to everyone.
Are Legendary Foods Protein Doughnuts Worth Buying?
After trying them myself, I’d say yes, with realistic expectations. These aren’t bakery donuts, and they aren’t trying to be. Think of them as a higher-protein version of a Little Debbie snack cake rather than a Krispy Kreme. Once I looked at them that way, I enjoyed them far more than I expected.
Conclusion
I went into this review expecting to dislike Legendary Foods Protein Doughnuts, mainly because so many protein snacks overpromise and underdeliver. Instead, they ended up being one of the better protein treats I’ve tried. The Chocolate Dipped flavor stood out as my favorite, especially after warming it in the microwave for a few seconds, and the texture reminded me more of a Little Debbie snack than a dry protein bar disguised as a donut.
Would I replace a real donut with these? No. Nothing beats a fresh bakery donut. But that’s not really the point. If you’re looking for a convenient, high-protein snack that satisfies a sweet craving without loading up on sugar, these do a pretty good job. I still don’t love the use of artificial sweeteners, so they won’t become an everyday snack for me, but I’d happily eat them again when I want something sweet that also fits my nutrition goals.
