I bought the Pawira stainless steel cat water fountain about five months ago after seeing an ad on Facebook, and I honestly thought I was getting something better than the fountain I already had at home. I had been using another stainless steel cat fountain that I bought from Amazon a couple of years earlier, but when I saw Pawira advertising a better grade of steel, UV light to help keep the water clean, and plenty of glowing recommendations, I was interested. I didn’t mind paying more if it meant my cats would have cleaner water and I would have less trouble keeping the fountain clean. Unfortunately, my experience with Pawira has been the opposite of what I expected, and I have now decided to stop using it.

What Is the Pawira Cat Water Fountain?

Pawira sells a stainless steel water fountain for cats, marketed as a more hygienic way to keep fresh, flowing water available for pets. The selling points include 316 stainless steel, UV sterilisation and a triple filtration system. These are the kinds of features that can make a more expensive fountain worth considering, especially if you want something that is easier to maintain and helps keep your cat’s drinking water clean.

The fountain is advertised at CAD $129, reduced from a claimed comparison price of $258. Replacement filters are another expense, costing around CAD $46 each time you need them. That is not a small amount to spend on a cat fountain, so I would expect the materials, filtration and overall design to justify the price. Unfortunately, the questions surrounding some of Pawira’s main claims make that price harder to defend.

My Experience With the Pawira Fountain

The biggest problem for me has been how dirty the fountain gets. I bought it directly from Pawira.com, so this is not a case of someone selling me a knock-off or a different product from the one advertised. I had seen the company’s Facebook ad, believed what it said about the stainless steel and UV light, and expected the fountain to be an improvement on the one I already owned.

Instead, the Pawira fountain has become much slimier and harder to keep clean than my older fountain. Even when I clean it regularly, I keep finding black, mouldy-looking buildup in the filter slots and around the crevices of the water pump. Some of these areas are difficult to reach properly, which makes cleaning a frustrating job. The slime also builds up around the pump, filter and the neck of the water spout, and it can become thick and black rather than just looking like the usual dirt that collects in a fountain over time.

I was particularly concerned when I noticed filmy bubbles forming inside the tank after I had left the fountain running for a few days. I kept wondering why this was happening so badly with the Pawira when my other fountain had never given me the same level of trouble. The two fountains have very similar designs, and they even use exactly the same type of water pump, yet my older fountain has never become nearly as slimy.

I cannot tell you exactly why the Pawira fountain has been behaving this way, but I know what I have seen while using it. I bought it because I wanted a cleaner drinking-water setup for my cats, and I ended up with something that seemed to need more attention while still developing unpleasant buildup in places that are difficult to clean. After five months, I no longer feel comfortable using it as a water source for my cats, so I have decided to stop.

Does the Pawira Fountain Really Have UV Sterilisation?

This is another reason I would be cautious about buying the fountain. Pawira advertises UV sterilisation as one of its main features, which naturally gives buyers the impression that the fountain does more than simply circulate water through a filter. However, some buyers who have examined their units say the supposed UV light is only a blue LED inside the pump.

A blue LED is not automatically a UV sterilisation light. The colour you see does not prove that the light produces the correct ultraviolet wavelength or delivers enough exposure to disinfect the water. If the unit only has a blue indicator light, that would not support the impression created by the UV sterilisation claim. I cannot independently confirm the exact components inside every Pawira fountain, but the reports are concerning because this is one of the features customers are paying extra for.

There have also been questions about the filtration system and the advertised 316 stainless steel. Some owners say the filters they received did not contain the resin described in the marketing, while others have questioned whether the steel is actually the grade being advertised. These claims would need proper testing to establish the exact materials used, but buyers should not have to guess whether the expensive features they paid for are really present.

For me, the bigger issue is that I bought this fountain because I believed it would provide cleaner water. My own experience has left me disappointed with how much slime and buildup I have had to deal with, while reports from other owners have raised further questions about the features used to sell it.

Pawira Cat Water Fountain Price and Replacement Filters

At CAD $129, the Pawira fountain is not something I would consider a budget purchase. The advertised reduction from $258 makes it look like a bargain, but the actual amount you pay is still $129, and replacement filters cost around CAD $46 per purchase. Those ongoing costs matter because a water fountain is something you expect to use for a long time, not an item you want to keep replacing or spending extra money on without getting the benefits promised.

My own experience makes the price even harder to justify. I already had a stainless steel fountain that cost me less and performed better when it came to slime buildup. I bought Pawira because I thought its supposedly better steel and UV feature would make it an upgrade, but I have not found that to be the case. Paying more for a product that has been harder to keep clean is not what I had in mind.

If you are comparing cat fountains, I would look beyond the original price and consider how much replacement filters cost, how easy the pump and filter compartments are to clean, and whether the advertised sterilisation feature can actually be verified. A premium price does not automatically mean a better product.

What Are Other Pawira Customers Saying?

My experience is not the only reason I have concerns about Pawira. The company’s Trustpilot page has a reported rating of 2.4 out of 5 from 50 reviews, with complaints covering delivery delays, tracking problems, product expectations and difficulties getting issues resolved. Some buyers have also questioned whether the product they received matches the claims made in the advertisements.

The return policy is another issue worth considering before placing an order. Pawira’s terms reportedly restrict returns once the fountain has been used with water, citing hygiene reasons. That is particularly frustrating for a product whose performance and ease of cleaning can only really be judged after you have set it up and used it. One reported buyer was still waiting for a refund 77 days after the returned unit had arrived, which is not reassuring for anyone who might need to return a faulty or disappointing purchase.

I would not assume that every customer will have the same experience I did, but the combination of a low customer rating, complaints about product claims and reported refund delays does not give me much confidence. When a company charges premium prices, customers should be able to expect the product to match its advertising and the company to handle problems fairly.

Is the Pawira Cat Water Fountain Worth Buying?

Based on my experience, I would not recommend the Pawira Cat Water Fountain at its current price. I bought it because I believed it would be a cleaner, better-quality upgrade from my older stainless steel fountain, but it has been much slimier, harder to clean and more disappointing than I expected. The black buildup around the pump and filter, the slime around the water spout and the filmy bubbles inside the tank have left me uncomfortable continuing to use it for my cats.

The questions surrounding the UV light, filtration materials and advertised steel grade make matters worse, especially when those features are part of the reason Pawira can charge so much for the product. Add the expensive replacement filters and reported difficulties with returns and refunds, and I do not see enough value here to justify the cost.

I cannot say exactly what is causing the buildup in my fountain, and I would not claim that every unit will behave the same way. But I can tell you that mine has not delivered the cleaner drinking-water setup I paid for. I already owned a fountain that worked better for me, and I regret spending extra money on what I thought would be an upgrade.

I would avoid the Pawira Cat Water Fountain. The price is too high for a product that has disappointed me this much, and I am not comfortable relying on its advertised hygiene features when my own experience has been so poor. I bought it to give my cats something better, but after five months, I am going back to what worked for me before.
